PS2 or PSP for low-level/homebrew/demoscene coding?

Hi all,
I'm trying to decide with which platform to go for doing low-level MIPS coding (I'm completely new to MIPS, but I'm curious about it), some homebrew and why not - demoscene coding. Since I'm fairly new to all homebrew stuff, I need this kind of advice.
I own a hacked PSP, but I don't have PS2. Since in my country the PS2 is already 30% cheaper than the PSP I think it is a bargain to buy myself the PS2 but I have the following concerns because I'm not certain of the exact hardware revision/model of the PS2 that I can buy:
* I'm concerned about the hacking method for the PS2 - what will be useful, whether I will be able to do it myself (chips, software mod - does it exists?).
* Installing Linux, will it be possible, what preparations will be needed for this?
And for the end:
* What is status of the PSP and PS2 demoscenes - which is more fun as general, which platform has more 'coverage' in the demoscene as a whole?
Thanks in advance
