Whether you need to buy hardware to run homebrew on your ps2 depends on what version of ps2 you have. In all cases, buying a copy of swap magic with elf launching capability will get you the ability to run elfs from supported usb thumb drives. The other program that can run elf files that is availab...

Only LEGITIMATE ps3 dvelopment is to be discussed here. Bypassing firmware checks for purposes of playing newer games is not a legitimate development purpose, and is thus not discussed. Bypassing checks to prevent a forced upgrade that blocks homebrew from working right is a legitimate topic, though.

PS3 Blu-Ray discs will not load under Linux on ps3. There is scurrentl no 3d acceleration under ps3 linux. but ther is a framebuffer device, as well as audio an controller support, so ps3 linux games can be written. Also tere's a dirver for the ps3's network card, normla wi fi, and bluetooth, as wel...

I strongly suspect they are locking down the RSX to keep you from writing a ps3 emu for ps3. :) Since the cell is a parallel architecture, you could concievably dedicate some to the OS, and have a lot left over for trying to run ripped commercial games. So they've got the RSX locked down because of ...

WEll this has now been discussed to death elsewhere. and it seems transfer speeds are not above the rates of the orignal ps2 large boxes. too bad. I just wish someone would press a simple elf loader that will read USB drives to CD and sell it cheap. Currently I know 4 elf loaders on CD, which are th...

Just a guess. This is what I believe the failsafe will actually be. 1) must be pluggedi into charger 2) must have battery power sufficient to complete the flash, in case the charger looses power. This should cover all bases. I believe sony is capable of writing a foolproof flashing algorithm by chec...

YOu can't put a backup loader onto a memcard and have it work. Sony wisely implemented the protection in dedicated hardware, instead of in software like on the X-Box. CDVDMAN is the rom library for reading from CD/DVD. But it doesn't do the protection checks. They are handled elsewhere in the ps2, a...

WEll, it's entirely feasable that Sony COLD do it. they just haven't yet. but an external USB adaptor and special enclosure could be made, which had the usb device authenticate the drive, to lock out 3rd party drives, and a new utility disc woudl be made that woudl support it. But i was thinking abo...

WEll, there's BEats Of Rage (legal version) which can take fairly good sized pak files. And in the future, more game engines will follow. Besides, everyone knows software expands to fill available space. :) One very good use for such a device would be a linux install for PS2, once the RTE gets rever...

USB on new PS2s
Apparently the new slimline model has USB 2.0 ports that are backwards compatible. This is useful information for those writing USB drivers. It also makes using external hard drves to store homebrew software on a much more attractive proposition, and access can be implemented thru usb_mass.irx Of co...

COnsidering that many poele may have no choice in the future with independence (and probably AR AMX as well) closed off in the newer PS2s, it may be your only method. DMS is well known for theeir developer friendly chips, that provide a means to boot elfs and provide access to unnoficial hard drives...

Legit HDLOADER clone in development.
http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=26132 Apparently some Japanese company is developing their own hd loader. It has 3 features the evil application does not. 1) supports PCMCIA BBA for old Jps2. 2) requests original game disc each time the game is launched. 3) Japanese character...
