From wikipedia A recent development (May 2008) allows homebrew programs to be launched without a trigger disc such as is needed in the older exploit, which also allows use of homebrew on unmodded systems with a dead disc drive (Free McBoot), however installation of the exploit to each individual mem...

@MegaMan That is quite interesting. My slim silver ps2 is not modded, it uses that swap magic software to run copied ps2 games and homebrew software. It works quite well, actually. The only thing that worries me is if I do not take care of the swap magic disc itself, then I would have to purchase a...

At a guess, an init problem eg it "exited" (which it shouldn't). Perhaps /sbin/init doesn't exist... specify "init=/bin/sh" on the kernel command line to drop to a shell. But don't expect a usb keyboard to automatically work though. Can't see the screenshot btw.

The technique remains the same: exploit loads LaunchElf. Find the exploit which works for you.

I haven't heard reports of an usb-to-ethernet device working on the ps2 yet. Would be great if it could be done that's for sure. The ps2 Slim has its own built in ethernet of course but that's no good to you right now. There were once(?) harddisk/network kits available for the Fat. Alas I don't see ...

The I.E. has no relation to usb... you seem to be confusing memory cards with usb flash drives. Please study the docs about all this, to know what is possible.

If your ps2 is old (vulnerable) enough, try searching for the Independence Exploit.

Usb flakey maybe. It might not be just my slim hardware setup, but usb access is unreliable. Sometimes works, sometimes not. I just have to reboot.

I tried, no luck. That's with a usb to 100 Mbps ethernet adapter, and a usb to usb direct network link "cable". The 2.4.17 mvl kernel seems to have support for these types of devices, but mine are probably too new. Would a back-port work? I don't know. A hub works.

On my files site I've put up version 1d of an initrd to help slim users boot their usb system. Use a kernel command line like this in kernel loader: crtmode=pal ramdisk_size=16384 quiet root=/dev/ram0 init=/sbin/init-pivot real=/dev/sda3 delay=6 (usual precautions re kernel and module versions here)...

Dayak, try creating the partition - mke2fs - on the ps2 itself. The old 2.4.17 kernel doesn't seem to accept ext2 partitions created by recent software I have installed.

1) On my slim ps2 I see '\000' for that byte... I have to recompile to get PAL.

3) my usb hdd no-go either; I make do with usb pen drives (and they're flakey at that.)

At a guess... the "as" program isn't the "ee-as" it should be looking for. Either your $PATH doesn't include where ee-as is, or perhaps /usr/local/ps doesn't contain/point to the ps2stuff tree.

Usb devices have a problem when used as root filesystems. They aren't ready at boot - usb drives take a few more seconds to become accessible. Kernel 2.6 has the rootwait option to get around it. In these circumstances the initrd is essential. ext3 is counter-productive due to the writes having a jo...

Code: Select all

ramdisk_size=16384 root=/dev/ram0
... I think, the size may be redundant. Modules to enable would depend on whether you have a fat or slim ps2. If you have the slim I'll post the kl config that works for me.

You'll need to modify things like kernel and initrd after you load these settings. Have patience... it took me a fair few tries to get somewhere. And it was tricky trying with a slim in a pal region. KernelParameter=crtmode=pal ramdisk_size=16384 root=/dev/ram0 quiet ps2linkMyIP=192.168.0.10 ps2link...
